L'estate scorsa Stephan sembrava vicino al  Paris Saint Germain. Come sono andate le cose?/ Last summer Stephan  seemed to be really close to Paris Saint Germain. How did things evolve?

Please don't get me wrong but it doesn't make any sense for me to speak about last summer. These are the facts: Stephan stayed with Juventus and Stephan was and is very happy at Juventus. He moved to Juventus to win trophies and there are still a lot of trophies to win. As long as Juventus is happy with him and doesn't want to sell him he will stay.

A gennaio o a giugno potrebbero arrivare nuove offerte per Lichtsteiner. Alla luce della forte concorrenza, c'è qualche  possibilità che possa lasciare la Juventus?/ Next January or June, new  offers can potentially come for Lichtsteiner. Actually there's a strong competition, is there any chance that Lichtsteiner could leave Juventus?

Come già detto fino a quando la Juventus è felice con Stephan e non vuole venderlo, lui resta. E' felice alla Juve. La grande competizione era, è e sarà un motivo di stimolo per Stephan. Stephan ama la competizione, Stephan ama le sfide. E' una domanda da fare ai suoi competitors non a lui.

As already told, as long as Juventus is happy with Stephan and they don't want to sell him he will stay. He's happy at Juventus. Strong competition was, is and will never ever be an issue for Stephan. Stephan loves competition, Stephan loves challenges. In his mind this is a question you have to put to his competitor's but surely not to him.

In termini economici, quanto vale oggi Lichtsteiner?/ If we  have to estimate the value of Lichtsteiner today, how much do
you think  it is?

Il calcio non è un monopolio. Il valore del giocatore dipende da molti fattori. Io non voglio dire un prezzo ma sicuramente il prezzo  di Stephan è alto. Con il suo modo di giocare farebbe bene in tutti i campionati di alto livello. Ha una mentalità vincente essenziale per un club. E' molto completo, un giocatore affidabile e continuo, sempre pronto a giocare al meglio. La sua forte mentalità gli permette di gestire bene la pressione. Gioca sempre per la squadra e non per se stesso. Se deve fare il "lavoro sporco" per aiutare la squadra a vincere,  lo fa e lo fa al meglio anche se questo non gli permette a volte di mettersi in luce in quelle partite. Questi giocatori sono spesso sottovalutati nella storia del calcio. Lasciami fare due domande:  Se fossi l'allenatore quanto sarebbe per te importante un giocatore come Stephan? Se fosse Brasiliano, Italiano, tedesco e non svizzero, mi faresti le stesse domande?

Football is not monopoly. The value of a player depends on a lot of different factors. I don't want to mention a figure but Stephan is without any doubts a very valuable player. With his playing style he would do in all top-leagues very well. His winner mentality is for each team essential. He's a very complete, consistent and reliable player who is always ready to performe at his top. He's mentally very strong and is able to deal with pressure very well. He's a player who plays always for the team and not for himself. If he has to do the "dirty job" in order to help his team to win he always did it and he will always do it even if it doesn't allow him to be an eye-catcher in these games. These kind of players are in generall often underrated in the world of football. Let me therefore ask you two conter questions: 1. If you would be the coach how important, how valuable would be a player like Stephan for you? 2. If Stephan would be Brazilian, Italian or German and not Swiss would you ask me the same questions?

Stephan sembra esprimersi meglio nel 4-4-2 rispetto al 3-5-2.  Credi che questo modulo lo penalizzi un po'? / It looks like Stephan  performs better in the 4-4-2 than in the 3-5-2. Do you think this way  of play penalizes him a little bit?

No per nulla. Stephan è certamente un terzino destro e la Juventus lo acquistò un anno fa per farlo giocare in quel ruolo per il 4-2-4 o 4-3-3. Non sono d'accordo che giochi meno bene nel 3-5-2 piuttosto che nel 4-4-2 o 4-3-3. Forse con questo modulo tocca meno palloni e lo si vede di meno. Ha una media di 80 palloni giocati a partita come terzino, come ala destra ha una media di 30-40 palloni toccati. Questi sono fatti  e causati dal sistema di gioco e dal fatto che i centrocampisti centrali sono destri e non sinistri. Ma questo non vuol dire che sia meno importante per la squadra, al contrario. Nella fase offensiva spesso crea spazio per i compagni e in quella difensiva fa un duro lavoro. Secondo me è un giocatore molto importante per il 3-5-2 perchè aiuta la squadra a mantenere l'equilibrio nelle due fasi, offensiva e difensiva. Come ho già detto Stephan fa il "lavoro sporco" per aiutare la squadra a vincere, lo fa senza obiezioni e anche se non gli permette di brillare come nella sua posizione originale.

La domanda è sta giocando peggio perchè  fa il "lavoro sporco" e non colpisce più come prima: la mia risposta è no e penso che anche Antonio Conte risponderebbe allo stesso modo. Allo stesso modo mi chiedo se le persone che lo criticano capiscono veramente che il calcio è uno sport di squadra e l'importanza degli elementi nella squadra per poter ottenere il miglior risultato possibile come squadra.

No, not at all. Stephan is certainly naturally a right back and Juventus Turin signed him one year ago as right back as they intented to play with a 4-2-4- or 4-3-3-system. But I don't agree with you that he's performing worser in the 3-5-2-system than in a 4-4-2- or 4-3-3-system. He's maybe playing less eye-catching in the 3-5-2-system because he's getting much less balls. As right full back he had averagely around 80 ball contacts per game. As right wing back or midfielder in a 3-5-2-system he has in average 30-40 ball contacts per game. These are facts and these facts are caused by the system and the fact that all central midfielders in the team are right- and not left-footed. But this doesn't mean he's less important for the team. On the contrary. In the offence is always creating a lot of space for his teammates to shine and in the defences he is making the game very tight. In my point of view he's a very important player in the 3-5-2-system because he's helping the team a lot to keep the right balance between offence and defence during the game. As already told, if Stephan has to do the "dirty job" in order to help his team to win, he'll always do it without objections even if doesn't allow him to shine as much as he would shine on his original position. The question is if he's really performing worser because he's doing the "dirty job" of the team and doesn't play as eye-catching as before. My answer is clearly no and I guess Antonio Conte's answer would be clearly no too, otherwise Stephan wouldn't play anymore. Consequential I've the quesition if the people who are now critizising him really understand that football is a teamsport and really understand which are the important elements in the team in order to get the best possible team-performance and results out of the whole squad...

Qual è stata la reazione di Stephan alla squalifica di Conte, ne ha parlato con te ? What was Stephan's reaction to the disqualification of Antonio Conte? Did he talk to you  about it?

Si, ne abbiamo parlato. C'erano anche due partite della Lazio sotto investigazione in entrambe, ha giocato con una mano rotta. Siamo scioccati, ma sfortunatamente non sorpresi che questo possa accadere in Italia. Siamo molto dispiaciuti per Antonio Conte e Angelo Alessio. Ma nello stesso momento ci siamo detti che una cosa è patire un'ingiustizia e un'altra è come convivere con l'ingiustizia. Se subisci un'ingiustizia è una tua decisione se ti rassegni e l'ingiustizia vince, oppure se combatti e mostri al mondo che anche se hai subito un'ingiustizia puoi uscirne vincitore. Da quel momento Stephan è ancora più motivato per vincere per Antonio Conte ed Angelo Alessio sul terreno di gioco e tutta la squadra ha lo stesso spirito. Tuttavia siamo contenti che Conte presto tornerà sul terreno di gioco e speriamo che quello che è successo non accadrà mai più/  

Yes, for sure we spoke about it. There were also two games of Lazio under investigation which he both played with a broken hand. We were shocked, but unfortunately not surprised, that something like that can really happen in Italy. We felt very sorry for Antonio Conte and Angelo Alessio. But in the same moment we told eachother that one thing is to suffer injustice and the other thing is how to deal with injustice. If you suffer injustice it is finally your own decision if you resign and let the injustice win or if you fight and show the world that even if you suffer injustice you still win. From this moment Stephan was even more motivated to win for Antonio Conte and Angelo Alessio on the pitch and the whole teams had the same spirit too. Nevertheless we all are very happy when Antonio Conte will finally return on the bench and we hope things like this will never ever happen again.

In Italia ci sono molti giocatori svizzeri, Potresti suggerire qualcuno, magari pronto per la Jvuentus? In Italy there's a lot of Swiss players? Could you suggest us some player ready for the Italian Championship or for Juventus too?

Si , ci sono un paio di giocatori svizzeri interessanti, hai ragione. Ci vorrebbe troppo tempo per parlare di loro. La sola cosa che posso dirti è che se rappresentassi un club italiano seguirei attentamente un giocatore come Diego Benaglio per esempio. Gioca molto bene e ha qualità fuori dal comune per qualsiasi club italiano, Juventus a parte, visto che la Juventus ha con Gigi Buffon il miglior portiere al mondo.  

Yes, there are a couple of interesting Swiss players. You're right. But it would take too much time to speak in details about all these players. The single thing I can tell you in this interview is that if I would represent an Italian top-club I would follow the situation of a player like Diego Benaglio for example very attentive. He's playing very well, has outstanding qualities and would be for each team a clear reinforcement - apart from Juventus Turin which has with Gigi still the world's best goalkeeper.
